Carol and Bill Graham, married 24 years ago at the First
Congregational Church of Meriden, had a plan. Having worked at the
Thrift Shop in All Saint’s Episcopal Church in Meriden, but with
the closure of that church imminent, they approached Rev. John
Clarke of the First Congregational Church to propose opening a
similar mission here. After receiving a warm reception from him
and the congregation, they began work around Thanksgiving of 2005
in the lower level of the church, previously vacated when church
offices moved upstairs. |
Starting with a festive Grand Opening on Jan. 5, 2006
attended by Meriden Mayor Mark Benigni, the Thrift Shop has
become a vibrant part of the church, serving clients from
9:00 am - 12:00 noon each Thursday-Saturday. All clothes and
other items are donated by consignment shops, individuals
and companies. During each three hour period, 15-30 clients
come to purchase very affordable clothing and other items.
In addition to the Grahams who are present every session,
about four additional volunteers at any given time assist in
serving clients. If you would like to be a volunteer for
this mission to the community, call the church office at
203-235-5704. |
